Research Grants For Biomedical Scientists
Being a scientist can be a very rewarding job. The pay is competitive, and the results of their labors add to our knowledge about the natural world; some scientists are even blessed with the ability to see their discoveries helping people within their lifetime. The only downside? While academic scientists receive a salary, they are expected to pursue outside funding in order to help pay for larger projects and student assistants. Grant researching can be time consuming; here are some great funding opportunities to look into to cut down on that work.
NLM Express Research Grants in Biomedical Informatics and Bioinformatics
- For: Supporting scientific research in bioinformatics and biomedical informatics. The grant is given by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.
- Application: Consists of a 12 page research plan and a budget; only electronic submissions are accepted
- Deadlines: Feb 5th, June 5th, and Oct 5th of every year.
Biomedical Research on the International Space Station
- For: Giving biomedical scientists the opportunity to research in a gravity-free environment on the International Space Station. The microgravity environment gives researches a unique chance to look into cellular aspects of disease. Scientists will prepare their experiments away from the space station, then collaborate with NASA and the astronauts who will be conducting the experiments in space. The grant is a collaboration between the NIH, NASA, the National Cancer Institute, and many other health organizations.
- Application: Electronic submissions only
- Deadlines: Sept 30, 2011
Minority Biomedical Research Support Awards
- For: Supporting and incentivizing research in biomedical sciences by groups that continue to be underrepresented in the sciences. These awards are given to universities and professional schools with an enrollment greater than 50% of students who are a minority in the biomedical sciences. The grant is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
- Application: Electronic
- Deadlines: Vary by award
Exploratory Innovations in Biomedical Computational Science and Technology
- For: Promoting research in computational biology and biomedical informatics in areas that are unexplored but show significant promise. The grant is supported by the National Institutes of Health.
- Application: Six-page research plan; electronic submissions only
- Deadline: Standard NIH submission dates
Biomedical Engineering Early Career Development Program
- For: Junior faculty doing biomedical research in either neural engineering or cellular biomechanics. The program is funded by the NIH and is meant to support basic research at the crossroads of engineering and the life sciences.
- Application: Electronic submissions only
- Deadline: July of every year
